KENNEY, Frederick Alfred "Alf" Age 100, of Windsor, passed away peacefully, Friday, March 24, 2017 in R.E.A.L. Residence Care Home, Windsor. Born April 1, 1916, he was a son of the late Stanford and Charlotte (MacAlpin) Kenney. Besides his parents, Alf was predeceased by his first wife, Jean (Smith) Kenney of Shelburne and their son, James Alfred "Jim" Kenney of Edmonton, Alberta; his second wife, Effie Giddens Delay of Collingwood; his siblings, Emma, Sheila, Leslie and Stanford. Alf is survived by his daughter, Joanne Denise, Chattanooga, Tennessee; grandchildren, David (Tevis) and their daughter, Mary; Chris (Tina), and Lucy (Win) Pratt and their children, Carter Franklin, Abby Franklin, Edwin Pratt and Will Pratt. In his early years, he was a photographer for the newspaper in Shelburne. He was also active in building the navy base in Shelburne during the Second World War. Following the war, Alf worked for the Shelburne School for Boys. He was then asked by the provincial government to go and work in Digby with the Social Services Department. Following that he went on to become the Executive Director of the Queens County Children's Aid Society, leaving there on May 31, 1967. His next appointment was with Hants County Community Services, retiring in 1981. Along with his first wife, they owned and operated AlJean Ceramics in Windsor. He enjoyed painting, and baseball with his grandchildren. Back in his youth, he was a notorious baseball pitcher, and he was invited to play in the major leagues in the United States. For many years, he also held the world record for the largest tuna ever caught. His last several winters were spent with his family in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The family were all so blessed to have him spend his winters with us; his grandchildren and great grandchildren will have significant memories of Grandpa forever, including when he enjoyed his hot tea and cookies. Arrangements have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor, (902-798-8317). A light dinner reception celebrating the life of Frederick Alfred "Alf" Kenney will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 5 in the funeral home's Elmcroft Reception Centre.
