Obituary of Gladys Ruby Jean MacAskill

Please share a memory of Gladys to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
MacASKILL, Gladys Ruby It is with heavy hearts, amidst wonderful memories, that we have to say goodbye for a while to our Mum at the tender age of 87. Gladys lived in Pembroke, Hants Co., and passed away Friday, May 26, 2017 in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born on November 6, 1929, in Arichat, she was a daughter of the late William and Alice (Dort) MacRae. Left to mourn her passing are children, Nelson; Larry (Lois); Linda (Mike) Sawler; Leonard (Stacey Dell); Sherry (Gordie) Brand; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way; and sister, Mathilda MacRae. Besides her parents, Gladys was predeceased by her loving husband of 55 years, Neil; brothers, Gerald and Lloyd and sister, Brenda. Gladys grew up in Arichat until the age of 13 then moved to Kempt Road, Cape Breton. At 16 she attended Normal College in Truro and started teaching at the tender age of 17. Soon after she met her Prince Charming and married on September 10, 1948. Mum was always ready for a new adventure as our father moved from one mining town to the next. At times she packed our lives in a day and was ready to go, but as long as we had each other all was well. Mum was an avid reader and liked to be informed. Her talents were many, which included sewing, knitting and ceramics, which every grandchild benefited from. Mum would like Leonard to know lunch is no longer served. We thought we could keep you with us forever. We will miss you more than words can say. We know you stuck around here on this plane as long as you could. We are forever grateful for your strength. Her four legged friend, Fergus, spent many hours lying around in her living room and will now miss his daily bread. A very special thank you to Alan. Arrangements have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., PO Box 981, Windsor, NS BON 2TO (902-798-8317), where the family will receive visitors from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, June 1. A funeral service celebrating Gladys' life will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 2, in DeMont Family Funeral Home Chapel, Lois Brison-Brown officiating. A reception will immediately follow in the funeral home's Elmcroft Reception Centre. Private family burial will take place in Pembroke Cemetery.Donations in memory of Gladys may be made to Canadian Cancer Society or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
