Obituary of Helen Ernestine Lamson Wilcox

Please share a memory of Helen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with both sadness and a sense of gratitude that we say goodbye to our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, Helen, at the age of 95, on Thursday, June 22, 2023. She was born in her family home in Curry’s Corner, a daughter of the late Percy and Georgie (Caldwell) Morison.

Helen leaves behind her sister, Peggy Darroch; sister-in-law, Frances Morison; children, Heather (Bruce) Wellwood, Barbie Hughes, Jim Wilcox (Debbie Parker) and Jennifer (Joey) O’Brien; grandchildren, Richard (Tomoe) Wellwood, Alison Wellwood (Adam Wood), Sarah Wellwood (Jay McConnell), Tyler Wellwood, Laura Hughes (Dylan Kozlick), Rachael Hughes, Stephanie O’Brien (Stefan Bullock), Jan O’Brien, Max O’Brien, Jake O’Brien (Jess Neary), Will O’Brien; great-grandchildren, Sam, Sophie, Ben, Cameron, Eva, Judah, Isla, Oliver, Carmen and Bella.

Besides her parents, Helen was predeceased by her husband, Jim Wilcox; brothers, Jack and Bruce Morison and sister, Barbara Howard.

Growing up in Curry’s Corner, Helen attended Windsor Academy and Victoria General Hospital nursing school in Halifax. She was a member of the Anglican Church I.O.D.E. and a founding member of the Hants Community Hospital Auxiliary. Helen was also a member of the Windsor Fire Department Auxiliary.

Helen learned to drive on a Model T Ford. She loved cars and worked hard to keep up her driving skills, she was able to drive until she was 94. She also loved biking and rode her bicycle until the age of 90. It was a well known story that, as a child, she drove her bicycle from home to school with no hands on the handlebars.

Helen loved knitting and working on the Lexicon every Friday. Her big passion was electronic solitaire, she was really the champion of “carding out”.

Mom's unconditional love and support of her family were her amazing gifts to us all. Her predictable sense of humour and positive and cheerful outlook on life were appreciated by all who knew her.

On behalf of Helen and her family, we would like to express our gratitude for the kind care and helping culture of the staff at Haliburton Place. Thank you to Dr. Chris Bauer and the staff of the Valley Regional Hospital for their care for our mother.

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). A celebration of Helen's life will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, June 30 in Windsor United Church, 613 King Street, Windsor, Rev. David Hann officiating.
