I would never describe Bill Fry as being the “Best Dad”, I would describe the “Best Dad” as being Bill Fry. You existed to me as everything a Dad ought to be before I even understood what the words “Best Dad” meant. Later, when I understood what those words meant, I knew that they meant you. You were everything that the very “Best Dad” ought to be and more. Happy Birthday Dad! Love you! Miss you!

May God have mercy on him, he was a colleague of ours at the Sirte Oil Company in Brega, Libya, in the Electricity Operations Department for a very long time. We only knew him as a man and a human being in the full sense of the word. Good manners, calm nature, loving everyone..
My condolences from the deep of my heart to his family and friends .

We so greatly appreciate all the wonderful tributes to Bill shared and collected here over the past very sad couple of weeks. We have learned so much about Bill from these memories of everyone who loved him and who were blessed by his friendship. Bill and Carolyn took great care of Bill's Mom through the last years of her life when we moved from Halifax. It was Bill and Carolyn who made it possible for us to visit Joyce on the very special occasion of her 95th birthday in 2011. It was also Bill and Carolyn who made it possible for us to participate in the Celebration of Life for Joyce in 2015. Upon Joyce's passing, it seemed to us that Bill had become the "patriarch" of our Fry family, and we will greatly miss his reassuring presence in our world, albeit from a distance ....
Bill and Don shared a deep love for their favourite childhood haunts .... the West cottage in Kingsport, and the Fry cottage at Hackett's Cove. They both loved strawberry picking in the valley, and boating at Hackett's Cove. They both adored their grandmother, Mary West. Bill and I shared a passion for digging up family history and sharing our discoveries. Bill certainly had a great sense of fun ..... we remember the tuxedo t-shirts he picked up for himself, Bob, and Don to wear to our wedding rehearsal party, and we remember the time at Easter when Bill hid Easter eggs for us in our apartment in Halifax. And, of course, we remember the time that Bill hid Don's entire flat of freshly picked strawberries in the front closet on Jubilee Road, and then left a note on the sideboard thanking Don for the berries!
The sudden loss of Bill brings home a powerful realisation that none of us know whether we will even still be here in this world tomorrow. We will miss our patriarch. Love always to Carolyn, Heather, Robyn, and Chris -- Don and Lori Fry

To all the Fry Family,
Jo and I were very sorry to hear of Bill's passing. He
was a long-term friend of mine, one of the best. I am
blessed with many memories of him... Halifax tennis courts, shared interest in rock music, hoisting beer steins in the Munich Oktoberfest tents, Zambia adventures, and attending each other's weddings. All long ago now. We did share a few more recent times together, but unfortunately not enough of them. But it was good to have recent contact with his family, even under dismal circumstances. We hope to maintain contact with Carolyn in the future. In the meantime, we will always maintain fond memories and gratitude.

Back in the 70’s, Carolyn, our friend, Laura and I, lived in an apartment in Dartmouth. In the same building, Bill and my husband, Phil also had apartments. Laura was an engaged matchmaker, making much use of the NS election list hat year. Within a year and a half, we were both married. During those months, we spent much time together. Bill was a wonderful complement to Carolyn. He was fun to be around, kind, had a sense of fairness ,a sense of humour, and unexpectedly a taste for travel.
Our hearts go out to you.

It was with shock and denial that we received word of Bill’s passing. Bill was a classmate in Dal/NSTC/TUNS’ electrical engineering program, a lab partner, a roommate one summer in a McGill frat house in Montreal, a house mate in Ottawa that same summer (1968), and a friend. He kindly agreed to be Best Man at our wedding after graduation. Always one for adventure, when we were in Montreal, one day Bill said, let’s go to New York City next weekend! I’ll never forget that road trip to NY City in his BMC(?) mini-like car to see the wild life that Saturday evening. Three of us, Bill, me and another adventurous guy, had an “interesting” evening, and then spent the night in a NY state park, trying to sleep in his small car - I think I had the back seat, feet stuck out the window - until the park police woke us claiming the fisherman would be there soon and to move on. A very crowded car! Heading back to Montreal, we hit a very intense rain storm that afternoon but Bill had his polarized sunglasses on, so he wasted no time. It was an weekend to remember!
A few years later, we had the pleasure of having supper in Ottawa with Bill and Carolyn who had just completed their orientation program with CUSO before heading off on an adventure to Africa. But electronic control systems held Bill’s interest, even in the lab at university; so control systems for heavy water and nuclear power plants seemed a natural field for Bill. An interesting and challenging field indeed. It was not really a surprise later to hear he and Carolyn were heading back to Africa for him to work in the oil plants of Libya. Before he retired, the oil company he worked for must have really valued his skills as they arranged for him to have a schedule of 4 or 6 weeks on/off schedule so he could “commute” back to NS. It seemed to suit him, especially the lay-over in Italy each time so he could explore. Another Bill adventure thing. I was envious.
Unfortunately, I lost regular contact with Bill after he retired. He certainly was busy, as was I, but such things happen and I regret it. Exchanging Christmas letters/cards is good but not good enough.
I will miss Bill. My wife, Barb, and I send Carolyn and the entire family our thoughts, sympathies and prayers as they cope with this loss. I know Bill had a very good and full life, doing what he loved with the people he loved.
Rest in peace, Bill.
Your friends,
Ron & Barb Amero

I am so sorry to hear of the untimely passing of Bill. My condolences to his family. Our families' history goes back at least to my childhood, if not before. Bill was about 6 months older than me so was always one grade in school ahead of me. I am not certain how his and my parents were connected, although one way would be that we all attended St. Andrews United Church. A third family, the Stewarts, Alec and Frances [Forsythe], were common friends and I suspect that the family links went all the way back to Kentville, were my mother and Frances grew up, and were neighbours, and where Joyce went to high school, at KCA (Kings County Academy), also my mother and Frances' high school. I have found Joyce in the graduating class in the KCA 1934 yearbook. Bill's dad was my Grade 11 history teacher at QEH. Over the years I was always aware, through my parents, of Bill's various work assignments abroad. Clearly Bill was a cherished husband and father, a respected professional and an active and valued community volunteer. A very sad loss for so many.
I'm attaching a couple of scans from the 1963 and 1964 QEH Year Books that the family may never have seen and might enjoy.

Carolyn,
Although I knew Bill was having health issues, I was still shocked and sad to learn of his sudden passing. My condolences to you and the family. Bill was to me likable (never heard anyone 3ever say a bad word about him or a complaint), unassuming, confident, articulate (but not verbose), impressive.
Bill certainly helped me out in the research department when I requested information on historical and military topics.
I truly wish I had been able to get to know him better. I am truly sorry for your loss.
Paul Brison.

My cousin Bill was the absolute best, always happy to help others navigate through the many, sometimes messy intricacies of life. When my mother died I wanted to bury her in the Habitant Cemetary in Medford, NS, where the West and Fry family are buried. Bill and Carolyn were incredibly helpful to me, as I was pretty clueless about the whole process, having never planned a funeral before. I will always be grateful for their guidance. At the buriel Bill took me to where our grandparents rested, which I had never visited before. It was a time that I will always remember.
Rest in Peace Bill. You will be forever remembered.

You were always so supportive and always there when I needed you. I will never forgot you and your memory lives on in your children and grandchildren.
We will do our best to look after Mom, because I know that is what you would want the most.
