Obituary of Alice Mae Brown

It is with sadness in our hearts that we announce the passing of Alice Mae (Murphy) Brown on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 in Haliburton Place, Windsor, surrounded by her loving children. She was born in South Rawdon on December 5, 1935, to parents, the late Howard Armstrong and Florence Mae (Hanes) Murphy of Centre Rawdon.

Alice was the oldest of 11 children. Being the oldest of so many children, she helped raise her brothers and sisters and was a skilled homemaker by the time she grew to have her own family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and homemaker who reveled in the company of her family and friends. Even strangers were welcomed into her home and treated to her kindness and culinary delights whenever the opportunity arose. A talented cook, baker and pickler, Alice took on the role of Camp Chef at Elmwood Lodge hunting camp back in the day and was so successful, gained recognition in an American Hunting and Fishing magazine! Alice also took delight in her planning and organizational skills which she put to good use in her elected position as President of the Bridgewater Legion Ladies Auxiliary, a position she was extremely proud to hold.

An avid knitter and crocheter, Alice could often be found with needles in hand creating something special for someone special. She always kept an open heart and door to anyone who needed it and kept an especially close watch over her “brood”.  She always offered any assistance she could at the drop of a hat. She will most definitely be missed.

Alice is survived by her children, Anthony “Tony” (Bonnie), Milton; Wayne (Lynn), Aylesford; Prudence “Prudie” (Brown) Kennedy (John), Lawrencetown; grandchildren, Melissa (Dermuid), Kayleigh (Justin), Chelsea (Chris), Breagh (Curtis), Tyler (Shauna) and Joshua (Jerfield) as well as 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Viola Ross and brother, Garnet Murphy.

Besides her parents, Alice was predeceased by her loving husband, Gordon Brown and great-grandson, Gordon Kennedy; along with many sisters and brothers, nieces and nephews. 

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). At Alice’s request, there will be no formal service. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations in memory of Alice may be made to The War Amps Key Tag Service, 1 Maybrook Drive, Scarborough, Ontario M1V 5K9 (1-800-250‑3030).
