I was saddened to learn of Dr. Avery's passing. I have many fond memories of him-his extreme kindness & understanding of student nurses & how he taught & moulded us to excel in the operating room, which was his passion. He was a great influence on me personally, and I spent over 20 years as a staff nurse & supervisor in Operating rooms. I was honored to work beside him both at PMH & HCH. I shall never forget his kindness, intelligence & guidance. You, as a family have many wonderful memories of a dedicated father, husband & surgeon. My sincere sympathy., Elaine Warner

I was saddened to hear of the loss of your father. He was a wonderful man who will be greatly missed in our community. I was always amazed to find him working in the yard as I walked by on my noon hour visits to my Mothers place on Clifton Ave. I enjoyed our chats as his face lit up passionately telling a story or explaining his method for effectively removing the dandelions from his lawn with a long handled tool.I will miss his frequent visits to the store as it was a real pleasure to wait on him and share a visit at the same time. His passion for art was very evident and I really enjoyed working with him as we showed his work in our Furniture store.During the exhibit he came in every single day to check in. He made a great impression to all who knew him and may his memory live on in your hearts forever. FondlyJeff Redden

Dear Helena It was with a sad heart that I learned of Avery's death - sad because I know the sorrow that is sweeping over you, and sad because we have lost such a fine and caring man. Life brought him many struggles, yet he was always the same caring and gentle man, and a gentleman. I can say little to comfort your tears, but know that there are a great many people who loved Avery Vaughan and share your loss. And, we regard you with great affection and rejoice that you and Avery have had these lovely years! We give thanks to you for sharing just a little of your time. Affectionately, Shirley Margeson Skinner.

We just recently learned of Dr. Avery's passing. Our condolences to the Vaughan family. Surgeon, family physician, artist, educator, musician, philanthropist, photographer, historian... If Windsor, in its early days was called the 'Athens of Nova Scotia', then Avery Vaughan was one of its modern day Renaissance men. An accomplished, versatile, community minded gentle spirit. Fond memories of youthful days playing ground hockey and basketball in the Vaughan backyard come to mind. I recall an occasion while trying to set a land speed record on our homemade skateboards ('sidewalk surfers' as they were called back then), flying down the hill in front of Dr. Avery's office. Avery and Hazel's eldest son, Paul, was one of the dubious 'time-trial' crew. Going wide on the hard right onto Clifton Avenue, he had an abrupt and awkward encounter with the fence above Smith's Pond. His arm looked decidedly out of whack after his unplanned stop. A quick trip into his father's office (fortunately, the Doctor was in) and he emerged with a cast on his forearm. Back on his sidewalk surfer before the cast was even dry. Add 'pit stop medic' and 'unflappable Dad' to Dr. Avery's impressive list of accomplishments. Sheena and I had the pleasure of engaging in occasional, extended conversations with him on visits to Windsor in recent years. Invariably delightful and entertaining exchanges. We always felt privileged to spend time with Dr. Avery - an exceptional person and true gentleman. Respectfully, Grant & Sheena (Bell) Boyd Val-Des-Monts, QC

I am sure he has a wonderful eternal life with the Lord, and I hope to see him soon. Much love and peace to you, Helena.

Dr. Vaughan was a true gentleman. He was a big fan of his home town and a powerful source of encouragement for others. Indirectly, he was responsible for me meeting my wife. I hope all of us will endeavor to emulate him. He did very well at many things in this life, but more importantly he did good; he saw that much good needed to be done. God Bless Dr. J. Avery Vaughan!

Please accept our condolences on the death of your husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather. Living next to Gary we had the priviledge of meeting Dr. Vaughan many years ago. He was always gratious and friendly, a smile at the ready. His love for all of you and many more was readily apparent. My favourite memory of Dr. Vaughan is from 1997. One evening he arrived at Gary's house driving a new car. I called out: "Did you get a new car, Dr. Vaughan?". He replied: "Yes, and a new wife too." It was a very happy time. We know you will cherish his memory. With warm regards, Margaret and Murray
