Janice: We heard about Rick's passing from some friends yesterday morning. We are sending our heartfelt sympathy your way. By the posts that are on Facebook it is obvious he was so well respected by his students and staff members and his many friends. Your love for each other was so evident throughout his illness. I know you and your girls are in emotional pain right now but let the many stories that people will share over the next few days bring a smile to you. Those memories are so precious and a big part of what type of caring person Rick was. I am sorry we cannot be there to personally pass on our sympathy but we are thinking of you and I will be in touch when I get home. Take care of yourself and I am sending a supportive hug your way.

I have known Rick to say hello over the years but in the past year and a bit he came into the bakery many times and we talked up a storm. I was always happy to see him as I knew it would be an uplifting conversation, no matter what the topic. The last time Rick came into the bakery he said he had decided not to stay home so much but to get out and about. We did not talk about his illness, we talked about the importance of positive attitude and positive outlook. I hugged him as he left that day, hugs are underrated, we should hold the hug in high esteem, that was to be my last conversation with Rick. I am very saddened by your loss. You continue to be in my prayers, hugs to you.

Sincere sympathy is extended to all the family as you deal with the loss of Rick. He was certainly a very special man and I know you will have no shortage of wonderful memories of all the good times. Rick and I shared lots of chats in the hall between the gym and the keyboardingroom at Hants West. We did many police patrols in catching students using our exit to get to the buses early. Rick was always cheerful, friendly and constantly had a smile for eveyone. He was so proud of his girls. Know that you are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. Sincerely Margie

To the Forand Family, Eight years ago I began my teaching career at AVHS. As a new teacher living in a new community, I felt overwhelmed and a bit lonely. Rick always went out of his way to make me feel welcomed both in the school and the community. Rick amazed me because he always had a smile on his face and saw the good in everything. He would ask "how are you?" but would really listen to the answer. He will be dearly missed by all. You are in my thoughts and prayers, Sarah Coughlan
Janice Munroe-Dodge, Jody Dodge posted a condolence
As former students of Hants West Rural High, we had the privilege of being Mr. Forand's gym students. When we had heard of his passing our first thoughts were for you, his family and secondly of the many qualities he possessed. We agreed that Mr. Forand was a kind and fair teacher who wanted his students to succeed in all areas of life, not just gym. Also, that he was enthusiastic in his teaching - "12 minute run" seemed to be as much of a joy to him as any. Finally we agreed that Mr. Forand was easy going; being well respected by his students allowed for few instances of punitive action. Once, being the first student in, I kicked my shoes off inside the changing room doors, only to have one hit a ceiling light fixture. Requiring janitorial support, I meekly offered my explanation to Mr. Forand as to how this might have happened. This kind of behavior was out of character for me and I was apprehensive of his response. I needn't have been. After assuring me that the janitor would take care of the mess, he encouraged me to hurry, as the bell for recess would soon ring. This is but one example. We hope that in the days to come, the love for the one you have lost carries you to a better place. With kindest thoughts and sincere sympathy, Janice and Jody

Janice, Katie, and Jacqueline: Words of sympathy never seem enough to ease the pain suffered by a loss such as yours. But just as you have your memories to comfort you, so does every other person who knew Rick. You could not encounter him wihtout creating another memory. From our days at Hants West, where we often shared a gym when I was coaching volleyball, or ate together in our middle level staffroom where Rick would try to teach the rest of us a healthy way to eat; from that smile that lit up the world when you met him, and the jokes and laughter he would share at school; from our middle level conference in Maine where he, even as the youngest of us all, was a shining example of professionalism and integrity, but could also join in the fun; from our Ottawa trip with Hants West students where he would get up early for a run in snowflurries before the skies were bright enough to wake me; from Avon View where meeting him in the hall was enough to brighten even the dreariest day, for he would never pass you by without smiling, stopping to chat, and even giving a hug when he thought you needed it; from talking to him Teacher to Parent about his wonderful daughters in my English class, those same little girls I had seen grow up under the wise parenting of Rick and Janice; so many memories. Rick's compassion, his love of life, his dedication to his family and to his profession - all of these have become part of the memories shared by thousands of people in this small community. No one could know Rick without creating their own memories and so Rick will live on forever in the hearts and minds of countless people in Hants County and beyond. He was a legend and you are his legacy. We are all better people for having known Rick Forand.

Janice, Please accept my sincere condolences to you and your family. I heard of Rick's passing through a fellow WRHS student, and of course I remeber Rick very well as he was my lab partner at WHRS, where he carried me through Mr. Carmichael's tortuous genetics lab on fruit flies. He also was the ski patroller who patched me up after a nasty crash at Martock put a deep gash in my head. I saw him from time to time at Acadia, and then lost contact after I began my service in the Navy and moved to Halifax. I remember Rick for his cheerful, helpful nature and athleticism, and it is always a shock when one learns of the passing of one of our generation at an age well before what we think will be "our time". My mother passed away in Halifax two days after Rick, following a short battle with lymphoma, and I can only begin to appreciate the void that Rick's loss will leave in your family. I wish you courage and strength for the future, and happy memories of the past. Sincerely, Steve Kempton (WHRS '80)
