Berwick has lost an icon. I have so many fond memories of John getting the field ready for fastball, playing tennis, conversing about different subjects, usually sports. He never had an unkind word to say about anyone. He always exemplified the best values of sports and sportsmanship. Berwick has had no finer citizen. John could relate to people of all ages and he was respected by people of all ages.My condolences to the family. You had a very special father.

I remember John at the Berwick Tennis Club. He taught me how to play and demonstrated the patience of Job in the process. I remember John as a very gracious, polite, intelligent man. I confess to picking a couple of his roses from the Post Office. Condolences to Connie, Paula, John Jr., Marsha, Anna and Families. He was a great man.

I have so many wonderful memories playing tennis with Uncle John. When I was 14 he stared playing with me and teaching me about respect and gamesmanship on the court. Summer of 1982 we played together many times and even played doubles together in the Berwick tennis tourney when he was in his mid 60's and I was a teeneager. Thank you Uncle John for a lifetime of mentorship. I truly appreciated his love of life!!!!
Love Craig

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you in this very sad time. My memories of Uncle John go way back to the days of getting a monthly haircut at his barbershop and home when I was very young After my haircut, Aunt Anita would call me up to the kitchen and always had cookies for me to enjoy. Uncle John was always up to date on all the sports scores and would always talk to me about sports when I visited. Growing up as a teenager I can remember seeing Uncle John on his bike, tennis racquet in hand heading for the court. He always was seen at the court with Marsha having a match. He was a great father, mentor and model citizen. He will be sadly missed. Thank you God for John's great life!!

Dear Connie, Paula, John, Marsha and Anna,
We have always had a deep respect for your dad. Growing up next door, we felt as at home at your kitchen table as we did at ours. It is a sad time and we know some memories will make you laugh till you cry. It doesn't matter how old you are, when you loose a parent you are once again that child who wants them there forever. Your mom and dad are there. Any time you want to talk to them, they will listen.
Our love to you all.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have lots of memories from the time when we lived behind you guys in Berwick. The most funny memory I have of your Dad, was one time during the winter Mr. Hilt and a couple of you guys went out on the snow in bathing suits to start sun tanning for the summer.
He will be greatly missed and always remembered. I do remember when I am in Berwick.
Prayers and thoughts are with you and your families at this time.

We are of course saddened by Uncle John's passing but will always cherish the memories of this kind and loving member of our family. Living so far away we always looked forward to our trips home to Nova Scotia and a visit to John's was always a highlight! Getting to share stories and catch up was nice and no visit was complete without a good talk about what was current in our sporting worlds. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched.

It is with sadness that I note the passing of John Hiltz Sr. He and his barbershop were part of the fabric of Berwick for so many years, including all of my childhood. He lived a full and active life, contributed as volunteer to enhance the experiences of those who lived in Berwick, and partnered with a kind and beautiful woman Anita to raise family of similarly generous and intelligent children. RIP Mr. Hiltz!

What a wonderful Legacy this family has written about this beloved man. The memories you must have! How lucky you all are to have had such a great influence in your lives, and how lucky he was to have such a caring and dedicated family (I guess having and being a great parent is not so much luck as it is very good planning and hard work!) Such peace you must all have knowing that you did for him everything you could to help make his life so fulfilled right up to the end. My thoughts are with you all!

My deepest Sympathy to the Hiltz Families.
Your Dad was a great man, kind, gentle and I have so many memories
of him, from Tennis and sports to sitting in his Barbers Chair getting a hair cut.
He would always take some tonic splash it on his hands and put it on my face as if
I had just received the best shave ever.
My thoughts and prayers are with everyone

My condelences to the family. I remember playing John at tennis whenever I wanted to play. He used to cut my hair a s a kid. I delevered papers to him when I was 10 years old. He was always a kind man, who gave time to the youth. I remember my dad Jon, and him playing in many tennis tournaments together. He always took the time to play tennis with me, and usually kicked my butt. :) I'm sorry for your loss... but it is heavens gain. Fond memories.
