SHAY, Douglas Bertram "Doug"
Age 84, of Hantsport, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Wentworth Creek on August 31, 1932, he was a son of the late William Alfred and Doris Harriett (Spicer) Shay.
Doug retired from TRA in Middleton, after 22 years of sales, at the age of 58. He became well known for his beautiful woodworking creations and frequent days on the craft fair circuit. He spent many hours sharing his love of woodworking with many people he met at those events. He was an avid New York Yankee and Toronto Maple Leaf fan and in his younger days, he spent many hours fishing and hunting with his friends. Doug was a veteran of the Hantsport Fire Department and a member of the Hantsport Town Council.
Doug is survived by his daughter, Bidy (Gary Johnson), Hantsport; sons, Karl (Allie), Porters Lake; Michael (Debbie Griffin), Centreville; Craig (Cassandra), Hantsport and a nephew who was like a son, Rick Shay (Pam Buffett), Bishopville; grandchildren, Ben Johnson (Bobby Jo Coney), Andrew (Stephanie) Johnson, Ryan (Kelsea), Jeffrey (Jessica), Coady, Jared, Jessie (Adam Gillott) and Tate Shay; great-grandchildren, Abigail and Alexander Johnson, Ellie Johnson, Peyton Gillott and Carter Shay; sisters, Carol Caldwell (Benny) and Patsy Siler. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Maureen (2015); sisters, Marguerite Young, Connie Stephens, Claire Rick, and Nancy Mosher; brothers, Alfred "Chum" and William "Billy."
Special thanks to Carrie Dauphinee and staff of R.E.A.L. Residence, Windsor, for their excellent care of Dad over the last three months.
Arrangements have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., PO Box 981, Windsor, NS B0N 2T0 (902-798-8317). The family would like to welcome visitors to come by the funeral home, Friday, October 21 anytime between 11 am and 1 pm to visit with them, in the Elmcroft Reception Centre and share stories and enjoy a light lunch. A private family graveside service will be held after the reception. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory of Doug may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association; Palliative Care Unit at the Hants Community Hospital or a charity of one's choice.
