First of all my condolences to the family.
It is with a sad heart that I write these words; I cannot tell you what an influence Mr. McKinnon was in my life. When I was in high school he was our home room teacher and my History teacher. I had many conversations with him about life after hours on his own time which he so graciously gave to a lot of students and he made a comment that I will never forget.
I remember saying how I would miss all my high school friends after graduation and how I did not want to leave the area; he commented, "No you won't and that if I was lucky one or two of my high school friends would still be close later in life." This shocked me at the time but he was absolutely correct, this one comment gave me the courage to go out into the world and since I have been in 10 provinces, 41 states and 10 different countries and had many experiences away from Windsor NS; just as he said I would. I thank him for being forthright and seeing this in me.
I have spoken fondly to my son Jack of Mr. McKinnon and how he would have a teacher in his life that would influence him like Mr. McKinnon did for me.
I thank him and may he rest in peace.
Sincerely Mitch Wile

To all of the family, I'm so sorrry to hear about your loss. I remember visiting with Uncle Roddie as a kid on family vacations to Sydney. He always brought some excitement and great conversation to the crowd. To Joan and Natalie, I know how much he loved your families and I can't imagine what you're going through- the more you love, the more you hurt. I hope for strength for you all and hope that you can someday take comfort in knowing that you now have an angel who loves you forever.

I remember years ago when I was a small child down in sydney visiting my grandmother. Rod would be sleeping with his chair folded back and I would come around flip the chair up by the handle. Then I would get alittle back hand in the face. minutes later it would be the same thing. But sometimes you would get a hand squeeze out of it that you couldnt break free off haha.
Later on in life I stayed down at Rods in windsor for a few days while i was checking out a course in Halifax that I was interested in taking. It was a good old time! Think maybe the last time I saw him. All in all he was a good guy. Rip Uncle Rod.

I am so glad I had the opportunity to be a colleague of Rod's and most of all to be part of his life as a close family friend. I'll miss Rod's profound intellect and the many great conversations and debates. His quick wit and wry humour always brightened the day. Rod's loving nature was evident when you saw him being Pappa to his grand children. Rod was a true family man and always enjoyed family times. Rod's love for Joan was visible through those smiles, winks and touches. They are true soul mates. Rod was a kind and generous man. I'll miss him deeply.

Mr. McKinnon was my favorite teacher at Windsor Regional. He taught me History and Sociology, he was either sitting at his desk chatting away or scribbling on the blackboard. He wore ugly sweaters (which were in fashion a bit ago), I remember there was a pink one he would wear and I would tease him and he would give it right back. He was great to listen to and he had a wonderful sense of humor. He will be remembered by many of his former students and will be missed. Condolence to his family and friends.

Roddie McKinnon is a Friend in my heart and one of the most influential individuals I had ever met . Although we had not made contact in those many years from the adventure of the train trip to Hamilton Ontario in the Spring of 1967 to the semester and Graduation at St Francis Xavier University in 1968, Thoughts of him and our adventures were often in my mind.
He has a profound influence on my life and I even see his personality in my eldest Son, Percy. His character and personality always was not far behind and when I was supply teaching at Sherwood Park Jr High in Sydney, I inquired his whereabouts from his Sister, Dorothy. Its uncanny how decisions can affect our life; some events seem like yesterday.
What a pool player and what a Teacher the students must have had; he must have kept them spellbound for hours. He had the natural gift of talk and the interest in all subject matter. He always talked about his Mother and Brothers and Sister with respect and concern. There is an empty void; however I know it is filled with the memories of all the people who have had the fortune to meet and know Roddie McKinnon , if even for a fleeting moment.
Now the memories are so vivid and I must readjust for the next little while, taking comfort in knowing that he has touched so many lives. My heartfelt Condolences to all. Bye Roddie; Your Friend, Neil

I was deeply saddened to hear the news of " Mr. Mc.Kinnon's" passing. I had many teachers in my high school career...but Rod was my favourite. I was a bit of a rebellion in high school, but Rod saw right through that. While attending WRHS my father passed away...Rod took me right under his wing. Often I was late for class but he always excused my lateness if I promised to share my chocolate chip muffin from timmys with him. I left WRHS and headed out west...I'd see Mr. McKinnon around from time to time and we'd have a good chat...I am so grateful I ran into him this past summer as I finally had a chance to tell him what he did for me all those years ago...and that was make me feel important and make me remember that I mattered. Rod did that for many kids that rolled in "late" through his door...this I know. Thanks for giving all of us a chance and making many of us feel like we matter. RIP Mr. McKinnon ❤

Mr McKinnon was my History teacher in Grade 12 for sure and probably Grade 10 & 11 as well at WRHS. I remember furiously taking notes while he talked. And then one day he told us this long story and I was taking notes and at the end he told us it was all BS; his point was to demonstrate how people would believe and repeat anything that was told to them by someone in "authority". I remember that lesson from him more than anything else I learned in History!

In a person's life time there are only but a few teachers that change your life in a positive way. You were one of them.
When I couldn't understand something you made it clear. When I was freaking out about an exam you put it into perspective and helped me relax.
Since the day I left WRHS I have thought about you quite a few times.
I want your family to know that you had a big and positive impact on my life. Putting me in track to having a wonderful family and getting a psychology degree and compeated in two Olympic Games hoping for a third. You were a part in all of this in one way or another.
Thanks for everything and I wish you well on your next journey.

To all of Rod's family, I offer my sincere condolences. I taught with Rod at Windsor Regional from 1994 until he retired. He always wore a smile, whether it was because he was happy or disgusted with something. This was because he didn't let things get him down. He knew life was too precious to waste it complaining about things that could not be changed. He was a very smart man, but never flaunted it. He gave his students a different perspective on life, teaching them valuable lessons in the process. He was the colleague who could brighten the darkest day with his wit. I can only imagine the family man he was with these qualities. g9bfF

Dear Natalie, Scott and family,
Please accept our condolences in the loss of your Dad. He was a wonderful educator and, obviously, a very proud grandfather to your children.
May you cherish your happy memories of him forever.
Sincerely,
Cindi & Wayne Northup

I am so sorry to hear about Mr. McKinnon's passing. My deepest condolences to all of his family and friends. He was a really great teacher and I have very fond memories of him.
Thanks for the 98% on my History term paper Mr. McKinnon and not breaking my arms for throwing erasers like you said you were going to.
You will be missed.
