SMITH, Edith "Belle"
Age 97, passed away peacefully August 7, 2017 in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor. Born April 25, 1920 in North Sydney, she was a daughter of the late James Emmanuel and Sylvia (Caswell) Vatcher.
A career woman before her time, she worked for Maritime Tel & Tel for 21 years, the last four as a travelling instructress, enjoying every minute of it. It was on these travels that she met her husband, the late Joshua Burton "Bill" Smith. On moving to Windsor after her marriage, she was a committed parishioner of Christ Church Anglican. She taught Sunday School for 13 years, and was involved in Kingston Guild, Sanctuary Guild, I.O.D.E. and Eastern Star.
Surviving are her daughter, Sylvia (Bryn) Rowlands, Dartmouth, NS; son, James (Chrystal),Walton, NS; three granddaughters, Cara (Ryan Anderson) Rowlands, Ottawa, ON; Christy (Matthew) Schwabe, Tsawwassen, BC; Caity (Matt) Rowlands-Milner, Richmond, BC; two great-grandchildren, Max and Theo Schwabe, Tsawwassen, BC; sisters, Audrey Townsend, Cambridge, ON; Betty Chesser, Brantford, ON; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by brother, Milton Vatcher; and sisters, Shirley Vatcher, Ruth Young, Elma Billard and Millie Gallop.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff at Dykeland Lodge for their care and compassion over the last many years.
Arrangements have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, August 16. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, August 17, in Christ Church Anglican, 531 King St., Windsor, Rev. Tom Henderson officiating. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery, with a reception afterward in the Christ Church Parish Hall. Donations in memory of Belle may be made to Dykeland Lodge Bus Fund, 124 Cottage St., Windsor, NS B0N 2T0 or the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 5657 Spring Garden Road, Halifax, NS B3J 3R4.
