When I first moved to Brooklyn area Paul was one of the first long term residents to welcome me to the community. It began a wonderful friendship where we exchanged stories, talked about winter wood, laughed about cars and I learned the history of his log cabin. With the wood stove burning, his dog at my feet and a cup of hot chocolate there wasn't a problem in the world we didn't either have a solution for or a recommendation or opinion on!
I learned from your Dad how much he loved each of you, how he made honey or enjoyed cutting wood. He shared his joy of painting and drawing out his next project using a sharp pencil in his book.
One year when I was stormed stuck in Armitage Road in what I use to call " The Scarey House:"...in the midst of the wind and snow up came your Dad on his tractor to make sure I was ok and not freezing to death! We had a great afternoon watching the snow fall outside with the wood stove going, and laughing. He made a lonely day bright. He gave me great advice on everything from relationships, to working with people, to living on a well and dealing with a septic; to how to build a fire in the wood stove, to how to feel a part of the community. Later when I bought what was suppose to be my forever home he continued to visit me and share stories. Every Xmas Eve afternoon I'd visit him in the log cabin and enjoy the green Xmas lights. Sadly when I finally realized my dreams were never going to materilize in Brooklyn I moved to Halifax. I kept in touch I was able to do that until 4 years ago when I returned home to Moncton N.B.
I did get to see Paul a few times after, when I had my motorcycle down from Moncton. I'd drop in on a warm sunny afternoon to see how he was doing after his heart attack and Paul would share his passion for cars and racing. He really loved his log cabin, land and chickens! The last time I visited, I dropped in to show him my convertible and he unzipped the garage to show me his sports car ....his blue eyes would twinkle and his smile would grow a little wider!
I am happy Paul was able to remain where he loved and he was sincere in wanting to have his beloved cabin passed on to the next generation of family who love it and its history as much as he did. I'm sure the next falling star I see in the night sky will be just your Dad racing across the sky and spinning his wheels! A twinkle in his eye and smiling.
For the last 4 years I've kept little green lights in a jar that I can turn on...its my warm memory of Brooklyn, Xmas and your Dad. I can feel the warmth from the fire and the sound of his laughter.
My wish for your family is there will be many more memories made in your log cabin, warmth from the wood stove and laughter! I wish I could have been there yesterday but my own Dad is terminal so it's important I stay close to home.
My story is I once knew a kind man named Paul who was a dear friend and he lived in a real log cabin. We shared stories and laughed.....and I know now what a Genuine Gift that was.
Warm thoughts to each of you. I am sincerely sorry for your loss of Brother, Father, Papa, Friend and Neighbor.

Karen, Nancy and Angela, we are so sorry to learn of your loss and wish to extend our sincerest condolences. I have many fond memories of your father. Paul and I spent some time together working on one of Paul's many projects. I always enjoyed his dry sense of humour. I will miss stopping in and visiting with him and having a cup of tea and receiving a bottle of honey from his bees. Uncle Paul always spoke of his daughters and grand children with a true sense of pride and love.

The Saunders home in Summerville is where some of my fondest memories of growing up live. On many weekend nights Nancy and I would lay on the floor of the 2nd story hallway, listening to and watching the kitchen table talk of the adults having their fun playing cards and music....I can still hear the sound of Paul’s laugh. My condolences to Karen, Nancy, Angela and family.

Rest In Peace my sweet Papa. I have so much love for this man. He had taught me some of my greatest lessons in life. He was so kind and giving and never judged a person. He treated all equally and I will aspire to follow in his footsteps. I can’t thank him enough for what he gave me. He loved his daughters and grandchildren and never gave up the opportunity to tell them so. I love you Papa.
