Obituary of Calvin Roy Guy
Please share a memory of Calvin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, and beloved friend, Calvin Roy Guy, age 74. He was born December 8th, 1945, a son of the late Captain Clayton Guy, OBE and Eileen (Cooke) Guy of Regent St. He spent his golden years in North Sydney, before spending the past 17 years living in Windsor. He passed away peacefully at 2:13am on October 30th, 2020 in the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor.
In his civilian life Calvin became an officer with the Caribou Sea Cadet Corps. He was employed early in life with Zellers as a department manager. He was later employed with Blue and White, a company that ran both taxi and ambulance service, something very common in the day. Calvin joined the fire department on January 24th, 1974, and quickly became known as a smart, aggressive, and credible fire officer. He was also employed as a relief operator with the department for some time, being known for his thoroughness and competency. It was said that when Calvin was dispatching, the calmer he sounded, the worse the call was going to be. Calvin was the person who convinced Lloyd MacIntosh, his lifelong friend, to join the fire department, where he remains as fire chief 35 years later. His talents were not limited to firefighting. Calvin and his good friend, Vince Penny, could belt out quite a tune, the more Irish, the better. They were both founding members of the North Sydney Firefighter’s Choir. Calvin was awarded both the Federal Exemplary Service medal and the Provincial Long Service medal. Towards retirement, he was employed as a truck driver for Caldwell, and became superintendent of the apartment building in which he and Nancy relocated to in Windsor.
Calvin is survived by his wife, Nancy Guy; son, Scott (Linda) Guy; step daughter, Tracy O’Handley (Kenny Cousins); step son, Corey O’Handley (Erin Mowbray); as well as his pride and joy, his granddaughter, Victoria Cousins; sister, Anita (Matt) Doucette and her children, Matt (Debbie) Doucette and Michelle Proctor; sister-in-law, Maureen Guy and her children, Kathleen (Dave) Williams and Erinn Guy; great-nieces, Emily and Julia Williams, Rebecca and Jessica Proctor; along with many, many more friends and acquaintances.
He is predeceased by brother, Gordon (in infancy); Clayton “Bud” and sister, Florence MacGregor.
Arrangements have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert Street, Windsor (902-798-8317).
