Obituary of Margaret Kane

Age 80, of Belmont, passed away peacefully at the QEII on November 5, 2020. Born in Halifax, she was predeceased by her beloved husband, Carl; parents, Charles and Genesta (Richard) LeBlanc; brothers, Gerry LeBlanc, Charles “Babe” LeBlanc and Richie LeBlanc. She is survived by daughters, Melanie (Michael) McCarley of Virginia Beach; Shelley (Cary) Hollett of Belmont and granddaughter, Maddison. She is also survived by brother, Moe (Elaine) of Chester; sister, Marie of Windsor; sister-in-law and best friend, Kathleen; sister-in-law, Shirley, both of Halifax; in addition to many nieces and nephews. Our Mom and Dad were not married long enough before Dad’s untimely death when they were both just 35 in 1975, leaving Mom as a single mom. As hard as that was though, she made it look easy to us daughters (that’s code for frugal!), as she was so good at providing for us and even managed to buy a new home for us where we lived happily for many years. Ah, the Joyce Avenue memories! Together with Mom, we learned lots of DIY and took care of many problem that arose in the house, even taking apart appliances to fix them…successfully! We were so proud of ourselves…we were a real awesome team, as Mom would say and she remained so very proud of us all! Mom worked for over thirty years for Maritime Tel & Tel on North Street in Halifax. She was proud of being a “pioneer” of the Long Distance Telephone Operators. She also played on the Maritime Tel & Tel Ladies Softball team, the Toll Tigers, where she was a badass in her own Myrna way, always loving playing the games and sometimes throwing parties for the team. After moving to the Windsor area and retiring, Mom was a team member at the Belmont Community Hall breakfasts where she kept up the pace at the very hectic monthly breakfasts, working with Shelley and Cary, Maddie and on occasion even Melanie and Mike if they were home. Mom loved her family. Her pride boundless for her girls, she welcomed and loved and appreciated her sons-in-law, Cary and Mike. But without question, Mom’s absolute biggest joy was her only grandchild, granddaughter Maddison. There’s no way Mom could be any prouder or hold more love in her heart, than that which she HAS for Maddie….because Mom’s love lives forever! Mom’s favorite pastime was hanging out with Maddie, having tea with Maddie, just doing anything with Maddie. In any conversation we had with Mom, her voice would soften as she’d speak lovingly and in kindness of her pride and joy, who is everything to the rest of us, but for Mom, Maddie was her girl, her world. We embrace this impassioned and never-ending devotion, it was pure. As proud as she was of Maddie, it has to be said that she was equally proud of and loved us daughters, Shelley and Melanie, who together with Maddie were Mom’s “three girls”. Our hearts are full of love and pride knowing we three were her three girls. Mom also loved watching Blue Jays games, mostly if they were winning and loved when she could confer with her brothers, Richie or Gerry about the team’s standings, often saying she was going to “call Ceto”. Mom also loved all the Blue Jays gear her son-in-law, Mike, would bring her or send to her. Only the Blue Jays themselves have more gear than her. Mom loved the ocean, she could watch it all day. She was also a master with a crochet hook and knitting needles. We five of her immediate family, and even others, have hats, scarves, slippers, socks, mittens, sweaters to remind us that her love lives on in every single stitch. Any who have items made by her, don’t forget there’s love built in. In recent years, as Mom needed more help at home, Shelley, Cary and Maddie came to her rescue in a really HUGE hard-to-imagine way. Without their infinite and fierce support, she would have left this life long ago. Her gratitude was expressed often though it was hard for her to find the words for all they did, yet in every phone conversation with Mom, she spoke of her undying appreciation for all of them. She loved all of the great food provided by Shelley, the big chores done by Cary and all of Maddie’s help and patience with everything she lovingly did for her Nanny. Their help was all-encompassing. As per her wishes, Mom has been cremated and will be interred in Gate of Heaven with Dad at a later date. In the spring, there will be a Celebration of Life, date to be determined.
