Obituary of Michael Vincent Downing
Please share a memory of Michael to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Of Ellershouse, passed away peacefully, after a very short battle with cancer, on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, at the age of 66. Born in Halifax he was a son of the late Harold and Aletha (Burgess) Downing. Mike became a foster son of the late Robert and Freda (Stevens) Miller, who went on to raise him as part of their own family.
Mike was a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle. He was a quick-witted guy and a great brother-in-law. Mike was the kind of guy who was always prepared and tried to make sure all around him were too, even if it meant you got a gift of jumper cables every three years or so. He worked for over 30 years as a dedicated employee of the Department of Highways. In his free time Mike enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting and he also loved to take the time to teach others how to do things that he knew a lot about, and they needed to learn about.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Sara (Ainslie); sons, Kirk (Angie Brothers) and Tyler (Teri Lynn Brown); grandson, Spencer; foster brother, Donald (Marg) Miller; foster sisters, Joyce Trenamen, Bernice Wile, Betty (Bubby) Harnish and Joan (Gordie) Shea; birth brother, Robert (Jeanette); birth sisters, Susan and Wanda; many loving nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Besides his birth and foster parents, Mike was predeceased by birth brothers, Kevin Downing and Ricky Burgess.
Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). A graveside service will be held at a later date in Meander Cemetery, Newport Corner. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mike may be made to Meander Cemetery Society, C/O Doris McLearn, 242 Lynch Rd., Ellershouse, NS B0N 1L0.
