To all the relatives and friends of Denny, we send our deepest sympathies for his recent passing.
First met Denny at QEH high school in 1946 and eventually knew his entire family. He played a major role in our wedding in Dartmouth in 1958 and was a frequent visitor to our home often with his brother George and wife Ethel. We went to local dances and enjoyed each others company for many years. Denny was a hard worker and rarely took time off from his business duties although we did enjoy spending time rabbit hunting and occasionally pheasant hunting in the Valley. We lost touch for many years and later I found Denny working for a Nursery near Hammonds Plains and first realized that he was going through a major health problem. When he relocated to The Elms nursing home in Falmouth we visited many times but always left feeling sad for his terrible memory loss. I'm quite sure he never really recognized me although he still had a fine sense of humour and was greatly admired by the nursing staff. I made plans to drive in and attend his funeral but was prevented regrettably by warnings to stay off the roads especially as a senior citizen (same age as Denny). I'm sure it must have been a nice send off and I would have loved to have been there to meet his relatives and express our condolences in person. Thus this rather wordy write- up. To summarize Denny was a fine gentleman and a lovely person in every sense of those words as were all the other members of his family that I got to know.
Rest in Peace Denny.
Don and Betty Sheehan and family.

Denny was a very loving and kind person. I enjoyed working with him and the "crew" at Sackville Garden Centre. We all shared many laughs together. He will be truly missed. So sorry for your loss to all his family and friends. I bet his dog Skippy will be glad to see him!

Richard, Bradley, Tammy and families: We were saddened to hear from Sharon of Denny's passing. After your Dad came to Sackville in 1948 to work for Dick Wittington, Jimmy also got a job there feeding hens, collecting eggs, etc. They became fast friends. In 1949 your grandparents Lewis and Edith built a home next door to Whittington on one side, and the Fifield's on the other. Your Dad built a greenhouse, and the rest they say, was history. Jimmy worked for your Dad, but they were first and foremost best friends. Your Dad and Mom spent many evenings at our house before they married and we had great times. In the end, all we have is wonderful memories. Treasure yours, as we do ours. Sincerely, Jimmy and Bea.

Growing up in Sackville, many of us learned to garden thanks to the teachings of this wonderful Gent. He taught and coached many people along the way.
Denny was always a thoughtful, honest, and personable voice in the mystery of dirt. I remember going with Mother to gather her flowers. Armed with her list of ' colours', she waited each year to go on a Saturday morning. I would go too and was introduced at an early age to the smells of spring inside that large greenhouse.I could roam and look, and sniff the air. I too searched for spring. It was always there. Denny made Spring! Mother would come home with trays, and packets of magic. She would do as "Denny" said, and coax, water, and raise her own colours.
What a marvelous man he was! He could make spring! He could make colours. He is in every yard in Sackville, and beyond. Denny was Sackville to so very many of us.
Thank you Mr B for painting our worlds.....

Denny & his brother George, lived with their parents on a large property next door to the family of Jim & Mary (Peggy) Fifield. The Fifield’s arrived in Lower Sackville in 1939 from Cape Breton/Newfoundland roots and they soon had seven children. Every one of those five boys and two girls, at some time, “visited” the Baxter property through a foot path of trees & grass. Some of the boys even asked Denny if he had a job for them!
Doug, my late husband, was the oldest child, born in 1940, and he love to “hang out” with Denny whenever he could sneak away from Jim, his little brother, to the nursery. Both Doug & Jim Jr. became excellent gardeners during their adult years, and I expect what they learned in the early 1950s around Denny & his family laid the foundation for some of their success.
Like most local folks, Baxter’s Nursery was “the” place to get flowers for all occasions. Graduations, weddings, births, deaths and all occasions in between. The flowers were always the best and lasted the longest!
To the family, please know how important your dad, mom, grandparents and other family members were to the economy of early Sackville.
Please accept my sincere condolences on the death of your dad. Heather Fifield, Bridgewater, NS

Saddened to hear of your dads passing.
Denny was a good friend of my husband, Donald in their early years. He provided the beautiful flowers for mant occasions, including our wedding, 61 years ago.
We visited with your family in Sackville many times and Rich you and our Michael were buddy’s for a few years.
Loved your mom and Denny but sort of lost touch over the years….often wondered where Denny was living. May he rest in peace.
