She was an outstanding human being!
She made other lives warmer, gave their lives more colors, helped them when they had fallen. To be something for other people, that is a beautiful gift.
I was lucky to get to know her. She made my life richer.
I remember the first time I came to Hantsport to look for my grandfather, John Fosen, who went missing during WWII, and Phyllis made her home a headquarters for the search for the mystery man.
She has passed the thin border who nobody returns from, but her kindness will live forever in the hearts of us who meet her.

It is with sadness i read of Phyllis passing. I will always remember her from being in church and at the church sales. She always stopped me to talk about how I was doing. Always stopped to talk to my children. When my mom passed, she was there for my family. Always ready with a phone call to see how we were doing. My mom always talked fondly about her friendship with Phyllis. She was a very special person to the whole town. She will be greatly missed by all.

Dear Jennifer & family
I have such fond memories of your mom's gracious hospitality when she welcomed this university foreign student from Bermuda, who you befriended, into her home for school break. Then 20+ years later extended the same warm welcome to my mom and I on one of the layovers for our Canadian memories train trip. She had a knack for making guests feel like family even across cultural lines. Her kindheartedness no doubt lives on through you!

I read this with sadness, and yet it brings with it so many wonderful memories of your Mom, Jennifer. What immediately comes to mind are the visits she and your Grandma would make to our home, and my Mom and Grandma to yours.
Your Mom’s friendship was cherished...the thoughtful notes, the bunches of flowers, and so much more.
Sincere condolences to you, and your family ❤️

Phyllis Holmes and our mother, Dorothy Porter, began their lifelong friendship as next door neighbours on Maple Avenue hanging out diapers on the clothesline each morning! As the "kids" grew and the Holmes' moved to Avon Street, the friendship flourished and visits continued until our Mum's passing in 1996. The Holmes family were the first to arrive at our house on Christmas morning each year and attended many birthdays and family gatherings. The Maple Ave. moms were moms to all the "kids" who lived on our street. Mrs. Holmes was kind, caring, wise and always provided a listening ear when needed. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her and especially by our family. Sincere condolences to Jennifer, Robert, David, Ian, Cathleen and extended family on your loss. We will miss her dearly and remember her always. So many wonderful memories!
With much love, Andrea Porter Stevens

Jennifer I wish to express my condolences to you and your family. I was pleasantly surprised by your phone call to me a while back and I am sorry I did not get to see your Mother one last time, but she was in my thoughts. The years we kept in touch are fondly remembered. Our meetings for "shoe exchanges" were always pleasant and we always had a chuckle or two regarding footwear.

Robert and Jennifer and family, I'm very sad to hear your mother has passed away. I remember Mrs. Holmes very well from being Robert's friend growing up in Hantsport. I remember Mrs. Holmes as always being very kind and gentle. The obituary says it all very well. Jennifer, the last time I spoke with your mother was last summer (or the summer before??), when Shelley and I stopped to chat with you and Mrs. Holmes while you were sitting out in your front yard. There was a friendly dog somewhere in the picture, too, as I recall. It was a beautiful summer day and a nice memory to keep.

Robert, Jennifer, David, Ian and Cathleen:
Phyllis was a most beautiful person: wise, generous, and very welcoming every time we met her. We first knew Phyllis when several sisters in our Banks family were called to babysit. Our sister, Maxine thought she was the Jane Wyman, movie actress look-alike! We all agreed and loved her. Phyllis lived to be 96 at home because Jennifer dedicated her retirement years caring for her with loving support while meeting all her needs without complaining. L2fhe

I’m so sad, but yet what an incredible life well lived. My deepest sympathy to you Jennifer and family - I’ve been blessed with so many memories of my youth being included in your family home on many occasions. Your mom such a great friend, community minded - I can hear her voice as clear as day and still smell the coffee / tea from church teas, cards or apple blossom teas - or our centennial fundraisers. Mrs Holmes was such a supporter of tradition, community and family and so thoughtful - always checking in on my studies, or in later years my boys. She never missed a beat with her thoughtfulness of others. And of course, her gardens - beautiful ❤️. My deepest sympathies sincerely, Theresa (McGinn) Rose

It seems there was never a time when Mrs. Holmes and all the Holmes family was not in our life. She will be sorely missed. She was admired and loved by all of us "kids". She was always consulted on Healthcare issues, broken bones, cuts needing sutures, etc. long before the call was placed to the doctor. She was a gentle woman in a gentler time. My heart goes out to the whole family and I selfishly share in your sorrow as I have always considered you all my family as well. Love and Hugs to each and every one of you. Beth

If I could only use one word to describe Phyllis, I would say “solid”. I might qualify it with “unwavering”, maybe resilient. Phyllis was always welcoming, always gracious and kind, always interested in each person she met. You could count on all of those things. Life handed her some experiences that would knock the strongest person off their feet but Phyllis walked her journey with balance, tolerance and compassion.
My memories of her will most often come from the early days of Jane & Austin’s move to Port Williams. We had some good talks and some great laughs!
