Mike ‘Doozer’ Hughes
Another fine natural athlete from Windsor heads farther along.
I played baseball and hockey on various Windsor All-Star teams with Mike. He was always our fastest skater and invariably the team captain. For my money, one of the best rushing defencemen to ever come out from behind the Royals’ blue line in the venerable Hants County Exhibition Arena.
Along with his athletic prowess and leadership qualities, even more impressively, 'Doozer' was an all-round good guy. Forever in upbeat spirits, greeting you with that 'great to see ya' smile and a mischievous glint in his eye.
Recall when Mike had his beginner’s driving licence (allowing you to drive in the company of a licensed driver) - you’d see him motoring around town in his mother’s Karmann Ghia… solo. Think he set a record for failing the road test. Having clocked so much time behind the wheel, he’d become comfortable with some habits that didn’t stand him in good stead with the driver examiner.
Asked him after one of his attempts, if he’d made the grade -
Mike (smiling): “Nooo… I was adjusting the rear view mirror heading up King Street and saw ‘Bounce’ (Rafuse), so I gave him a wave out my window.”
Me: “No hands on the wheel? Yeah, that wouldn't go down well.”
Mike: “Ended the test, then and there."
We both laughed.
Mike and I worked together as counsellors at Camp Mockingee one summer and for some reason he took to rearing back when he saw me approaching and announce in a booming officious tone - “G. BOYD!!"
To which I’d respond, drill sergeant style - “M. HUGHES!!"
Thanks for the laughs and the winning memories, ‘M. Hughes'
RIP Captain
Very sorry for your and your family’s loss, Barb.
G. Boyd
(Mike might’ve been Number 1 in your heart and on the ice, Barbie... but he was definitely Number 2 on the Wilcox & Hughes doubles tennis team... ; )

Dear Barbie and family,
I was saddened to hear of Mike's passing. My deepest condolences.
I have fond memories of Mike when I used to hang out with his brother, Jim. I was always made very welcome in their home.
And of course attending school at Curry's Corner.
Having left the province quite a few years ago, I've lost touch with many of my old friends, much to my regret.
I'll always remember Mikes cheerfulness and upbeat personality.
Again, my deepest sympathy.

Mike was very important to our family.
We first met him when we took our Sweets Corner Cubs to camp with boys from Windsor United Church. Mike was too old and Darrell was too young but they came along with the rest, but they all fit in and Mike was a big part of the fun at that camp. Later he was a leader for the boys taking up collection at church. They loved to do that for him and they would come to church in hopes it was their turn to do it. He was a Sunday School teacher, too.
When he came to Hants West to teach Physical Education he coached both Dan and Darrell in different sports and taught Darrell in Phys Ed class. He coached Dan one summer in Track and Field. I travelled to work with him and we had some great discussions along the way.
Even visiting him at the hospital and the Elms one would get a warm feeling from those big smiles that he passed on.
We loved him.
Barb, you are in our thoughts and prayers often and maybe he and Dan might be sharing time together.

Barb,
My first memory of Mike was when I was about eleven and he dropped you off to work at Windsor Elementary one day. I watched, I mean I wanted to see what your husband looked like. He was smiling, just so happy he almost vibrated. You were a great looking couple.
Our lives have been intertwined for over forty years with my whole family having great memories of Mike (except that creepy gorilla suit on Halloween. He would come over and stand there not saying a word (that was Mike...Right?).
Mom and Mike had a special bond and connection, she supplied him with homemade bread and he supplied her with sweet treats. Mike's story would have wrecked her.
I'm sorry for your and the girls lost and the hard years you have had, but so thankful Mike is at Peace. He deserves it. RIP Mike. Love always.

Barbie, Laura, and Rachael: As a husband and father, Mike was exceptional. His love for you and his pride in your accomplishments surpassed all else. I have so many memories of seeing his eyes light up because of his family. As a teacher, Mike, like many of us, did not appreciate the impositions and restrictions that took away the sheer joy of teaching. But he loved his students. Our Ottawa trips showed him at his best as he shared the Nation’s Capital with young kids, modelling appreciation and respect. He loved every minute. As a friend, Mike was the guy always ready for a road trip - anywhere, any time - and he always made sure it was memorable because of the adventure experienced and the knowledge gained. In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: “A friend is a person with whom I may be sincere. Before him I may think aloud. A friend may well be reckoned the masterpiece of nature.” Mike was that kind of friend. I am honoured to have had Mike as my friend.

To Mike's wife, daughters, family and friends.
Please accept my deepest sympathy and sincere condolences on his passing.
I met Mike when I attended Acadia University in 1970-71, and met him on the ice as we both were trying out for the Acadia Hockey Axemen.
I packed it in after the first 2 practices, because I did not want to be one of three goal tenders, as my ego was too big, having been the starting goaltender for the Memorial University Beothuks the year before, before we left Newfoundland, and moved to Wolfville, N.S.
Mike, being a solid guy and great player, persevered, and naturally made the team.
I was happy for him and a couple of the other deserving guys we knew.
Every time after that when I saw him on campus he would always stop and ask me how I was doing. We really enjoyed running in to one another and there was always laughter and a joke, whether in the sub, at a dance or after a game.
Mike never forgot you and by golly you never forgot him, even though you did not know him well. He had that ability to connect with people and you always felt better for seeing him and having a chat about anything.
In fact , I can see him now in my mind's eye, as I read his obituary a few minutes ago and was shocked and saddened, so I just wanted to tell you of my connection with him, lo those many years ago.
He always had a grin and was such a positive soul- one of the real people you run into in life.
I have not seen him since 1972, but wish I had run into him over the years and reconnected.
May God Love Mike, and May God Bless you, his loving family, in your hour of sorrow.
Sincerely.
Frank Hiscock.

Barb, Laura, Rachel and families,
I am so sorry for your loss. Had the honor of meeting Mr. Hughes at Hants West as one of his many students both for Phys Ed and other subjects in Grade 7. He was one of my favorites and spoke often of his beautiful family and throughout the year we'd hear about your names which gave his teachings a much more personal touch. You where his world as I know he was yours and I want you all to know....May The Wind Blow Gently on Your Back! Words he wrote in my year book.
My heart, thoughts and prayers are with you all during this time.

Barbie, Laura Jane and Rachel,
I am saddened for your loss but grateful for all the memories of times we spent together...many, many years of Christmas Eve celebrations, cottages, boating and fun times in Martin’s River. I ran into Jennifer in Canmore about a month ago and we had quite the chat about all the spin-off connections realized from you and Mike asking Mom to care for Laura Jane and Rachel and the impacts generated because of that connection. I remember a road trip to Suttles and Seawinds when Rachel was not long into stringing a few words together and I was recovering from a cold...every time I sneezed or coughed she would say “her sneezed!” By the time we were on the way home every time I sneezed or coughed Mom, Dad, Rachel and I were all saying “her sneezed!”...Mike got a few bow ties out of that trip and he wore them with the biggest grin on his face.
Mike was an amazing person and he always had a helpful hand to give, smile on his face , a twinkle in his eye and never a bad word to say about anybody (regardless of how badly we mutilated the Christmas Carols). He made a difference in many people’s lives and will never be forgotten.
Hugs to all and treasure your memories!

we were young—and him at heart—
our trusted patriarch of travel
keeping us on task and down to earth
and making damn sure fun was a part
of our collective education
a smile as wide as the Rideau Canal—

like an Algonquin in short sleeves
he was our guide—showing the way
making us champions of the culture
