In the 1960's I was a student of Mr. Skuffham' s in Liverpool. His Geography class was one of my favorite classes - he made learning about the world fun. I credit him for my desire to travel the world. I was sad to read of his passing but happy that he has had a happy and fulfilling life. My condolences to the family.

I am very sorry to hear of Mr. Skuffham's passing. He was my Grade 11 history teacher at Barrington Municipal High School in 1963-64. He was well-liked as a teacher and opened our eyes to the importance of studying history, and learning from it. He emphasized that history is far more than a catalogue of dates, personalities and events to be memorized and then forgotten. He taught us to look for patterns and meaning. In addition he kept a small library at the back of his classroom, which he willingly loaned to students if they asked.
In 2000, as president-elect of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union, I was asked to speak at the Halifax County Local retirement dinner. Who did I find myself sitting next to but Mr. and Mrs. Skuffham? I introduced myself and we chatted a bit about our time at BMHS. I confessed that I still had a couple of books that he had lent me - Bertrand Russell's "Problems of Philosophy" and George Gamow's "One, Two, Three - Infinity." We chuckled about it, and he didn't seem to take it amiss that I had still not returned them (through oversight, not deliberately, I assured him).
Mr. Skuffham's broad-ranging intellectual interests, easy-going approach to teaching and openness to his students made a great impression on 16-year-old me. Of all my high school teachers, he was the best. It is largely due to him that I majored in history in university and became a history teacher myself. I am glad to read in his obituary that he had a rich and happy life. I will always remember him fondly, even though our paths only crossed twice at widely-separated intervals. Sincere condolences to Mrs. Skuffham and the family.

It is always sad to read of friends passing, but Bob's obituary was so well written, that it brought a warm smile to my face. My memories of Bob are through his music and his various performances at the Shore Club, as well as the family visits for lobsters.
