The Whispering Wind
It’s normal that you shed a tear
When first I took my leave
But know that I am happy here
No need for you to grieve
The beauty that’s surrounding me
Would take your breath away
There’s colors that I can’t describe
The air’s a sweet bouquet
Don’t worry ‘bout the things unsaid
There’s nothing to forgive
Don’t lay your heart upon the past
Just let our memories live
And though your earthly eyes can’t see
Believe that I am there
Whene’er you feel the whispering wind
Flow gently through your hair
I’m there when fireflies light the dark
When candles mark a year
I’m there when you are far from home
And when you need an ear
I’m always just a thought away
Our souls could never part
Connected for eternity
Forever in your heart

For Garnet - Eulogy - By Ashley Connors
It warms our hearts to see you all here today, to acknowledge the life of a very special man, my father in law, Garnet. My name is Ashley, and for those of you who don’t know me, I am Mike’s wife. I have been part of this family for almost 20 years- a fraction of how long this family has been a force, with the grounding center being Garnet and Carolyn- and their love.
When I first started coming around, so to say, I was quite concerned that Garnet maybe didn’t like me… he was forever teasing me and trying to get me going- and he was successful quite a few times. When I would voice this to Mike, he would say- don’t be so silly, Ashley, that is just the old man. And it was… later when Mike and I got married, I became affectionately known as his favorite daughter in law…. I would say Garnet, you only have one daughter in law, so I’m your favorite and your least favorite. If I asked everyone in this congregation who had been teased by Garnet to raise their hands, it would look like we were doing the wave in this church; and that would bring out Garnet’s infamous grin. It didn’t take long for me to realize that Garnet was a man of love, he just showed it in his own unique way- his sense of humor and mischievousness being one of those ways.
The other way Garnet showed his love was through commitment. Garnet was committed to his community through work with the Masonic lodge. He was committed to his little church in Ardoise. He sang in the choir with Carolyn for a long time, and long tended the lawns, turned on the heat, and ensured the yard was cleared of snow so that service on Sunday would be a go. When something needed done (and done right), Garnet would be there. He was the family house painter, stacker of the wood, builder of whatever you might need, helper- and natural foreman. This commitment was important to Garnet- he always showed up… yet another example of how he showed he cared.
Garnet and Carolyn have been married 54 years. They raised 4 wonderful children and have been a huge presence in the life of all their grandchildren- of both the human and pet variety. Garnet’s commitment to his family was unwavering. He looked for any opportunity to make his grandkids happy and would often pull out just the gift they wanted (even the ridiculously extravagant ones) and he and Carolyn were known for packing up the grandkids and running off to PEI or Yarmouth, or wherever, for a weekend getaway. If you attend the celebration after the service, you will see pictures of kids on amusement rides and Garnet right beside the child on the carousel, in the model truck, or bumper car. I learned from this family and Garnet’s family vacations what it is like to have every moment filled with fun and very good food. The kids always came back tired and happy and talking about the next possible trip. There was a light in Granddad’s eyes when he was with his grandkids. He would do anything to make them happy- play with their toys, dance in TikTok videos, take them to the best playgrounds, and love them with his whole heart.
Garnet never missed a family function- unless it was hunting season. This is a trait he has passed on to his son. Mike and Garnet would both be quick to say that in hunting they were “providing for the family…” for some of those fall birthdays (eh Cynthia?) they’d still show up… it would just be after dark.
Whether hunting, fishing, taking a trip in the Argo with the kids, snowmobiling (I’ve heard some interesting stories from days gone by), camping, or canoeing, Garnet found his peace in nature and was also committed to sharing the joy of nature with others. I’ll never forget watching Garnet help my son, Charlie, learn to fish off the dock at camp… he was more excited than Charlie when the first fish was brought in. Garnet would share trips with many friends and family- Uncle Charlie, Dave and David, Mike, and select friends who earned the right to the secret spots. And Garnet would go on any trip that there was- fishing, rabbit, deer, bear, moose… you name it. He made trips to Newfoundland and Cape Breton to hunt moose and this was always a highlight for him. I personally loved seeing the meticulously packed food for the trip. I’d always tell Mike to be safe, but I never once worried if he would eat well.
I wasn’t sure I was the right person to speak today because I don’t know all the stories from when Garnet was young, but I can sure speak to the incredible man he was… he’d grin at me saying that, because as much as he could give it to me, I usually gave it right back to him. That was our relationship. I know that Carolyn, Chris, Wan, Cyn, Mike, the grandkids and the rest of the family are all wondering how things will be without Garnet, but let me tell you- as long as there is a family function, Garnet will be there. You each have so much of his character- Mike- you will carry on his commitment, work ethic, and love of the outdoors and “providing for the family”, Cynthia- let’s face it, you’ve got that sense of humor and can give it and say what needs to be said- but you are just as loving as your dad. Wanda you have his love of nature and you are just as fun-loving as he was and always want to include others, and Chrissie, you have his commitment to quality, strength, and you are well respected by all others who meet you- just like your dad…. This family is missing the man, and that won’t change, but what Garnet ensured through the way he lived his life was that nobody in his family would ever be without a little piece of him. You’ll forever be my favorite father in law, Garnet, and I want to say in front of all of these people gathered here today that I was so lucky to know you, be welcomed into your family, and have a life that knows how the Connors family rolls- and that is together, and it is because of you. Thank you for all the love, laughter, and light you brought into this world. Your legacy lives on through your family.

Such sad news to hear that Garnet has passed away. Kim will always remember Grammie Cochrane recounting the story of Garnet bringing a horse into the church, being impressed that Uncle Garnet thought she was capable of bringing in and stacking wood in the basement for the winter, and the warm hugs and quiet words of support in good times and in bad. Spencer recalls staying overnight, waking up at 10 the next morning and having Uncle Garnet tell him the day was already half over. Emily always counted on Uncle Garnet asking if she had a job yet, and a boyfriend. And Dave looked forward to Garnet's fishing and hunting tales, especially the ones involving popcorn, donuts, and bears. We will all miss him for his mischievous grin, his warm welcome, and his generous love!

Sending our very deepest sympathies to all of Garnets family; to Carolyn and all the kids, spouses and grandchildren, and to his siblings who I know will feel his loss deeply as well. He was a neighbor for many years and then they moved to the big city (Brooklyn) lol but whenever we met up at any function or out doing errands it was always such a great conversation with Garnet, getting caught up on all the news. Hugs to you all, we know the loss you are feeling xo

Gone Fishing
I’ve finished life’s chores assigned to me,
So put me on a boat headed out to sea.
Please send along my fishing pole,
For I’ve been invited to the fishing hole.
Where every day is a day to fish,
To fill your heart with every wish.
Don’t worry or feel sad for me,
I’m fishin’ with the Master of the Sea.
We will miss each other for awhile,
But you will come and bring your smile.
That won’t be long you will see,
Till we’re together you and me.
To all of those that think of me,
Be happy as I go out to sea.
If others wonder why I’m missin’,
Just tell ‘em I’ve gone fishin’.

Dear Carolyn, I’m so saddened to read of Garnet’s passing. That demon cancer takes so many great people away from their families. Condolences to all your family.
I remember the first time we met Garnet. We were in 6th grade and on a school bus going somewhere. I do remember his laughter and that he was definitely interested in you. So, that was the beginning of your twosome that went on to marriage (an outstanding 53 yr.) and raising your children.
I’m ready to help out with anything you need. Maybe some hugs. Love, Sheila.

Hi Carolyn, so sorry to hear of Garnets passing, He was bigger than life and you never knew what he was going to do but he was always the spark to a comical situation which left everyone in stiches. I don't think there is anyone that every had or could say a bad word against him. He was proud but humble and his riches were his family. I think of all the times I used to drop in unannounced and you'd make a coffee and wouldn't let me leave until he came home and we'd all have some chuckles. He'll be missed by all the people that knew him throughout the years. Some like to fight, some like to be rude but not Garnet he liked to be the glue to a happy day and making people smile.
