Obituary of Alice Kimball
Age 95, of Windsor, died peacefully in her home on the afternoon of Friday, February 2, 2024. She was born on November 1, 1928, in Antigonish, the eldest child of the late George and Sadie (MacDonald) Carson of James River, Antigonish County.
Alice grew up in James River with her parents and brothers and sisters, attended school there and went on to finish high school at Mount St. Bernard in Antigonish. From there, she was ‘recruited’ by the Antigonish school board to attend the Provincial Normal College in Truro for three months before she was sent to teach school at the one room schoolhouse in Cape George. After several challenging years teaching 21 students in primary to grade ten, she returned to Antigonish before moving on to Halifax in the early 1950s where she lived and worked at Mills Brothers on Spring Garden Road and later with the department of National Defence.
In 1961, she married Robert G. Kimball and became the new mother to his five boys, Rob, Matt, Derrick, Curt and Damien. They lived in Halifax and CFB Greenwood, and later the family moved to Frasers Mills and on to the family farm at Loch Katrine, Antigonish County where Nellie and Justin were born.
After the family was grown, Bob and Alice moved to Windsor in 1994 and after his death in 1997, Alice remained in their new home on Dill Road ever since, becoming a well known fixture in the community. She belonged to the St. John’s Roman Catholic Church and the Catholic Women’s League. She was also a member of the local chapter of the Women’s Institute of Nova Scotia and supported the Hants Community Hospital Auxiliary. She entertained a small group of ladies for weekly coffee at her home on Dill Road for over twelve years – the coffee “klatch”.
She had a beautiful personality, kind and warm, with a ready smile and personal interest in whomever she met. She was always positive and “can do”. She enjoyed social gatherings and loved to be stylishly turned out. She was in constant contact with her many family members and keenly interested in following what was happening in everyone’s lives, particularly the younger generations. She was remarkable in the kitchen and the regular purveyor of her delectable wares.
An avid reader and interested in both the news of the world and local events, to the end she did her daily crosswords and kept up on the world of golf and baseball. She remained independent and in her own home.
Besides her parents, Alice is predeceased by brothers, George and Tom; sister, Helen; daughter-in-law, Mary and grandson, Keegan.
She will be deeply missed by her seven children, Dr. Robert Kimball (Marian), of Statesville, NC.; Matthew Kimball (Mary), of Halifax and Loch Katrine; Derrick Kimball (Heidi) of Cambridge; Curtis Kimball (Carolyn), of Windsor; Damien Kimball (Bee) of Bangkok; Nellie Blanchard (Dean) of St. Albert, Alta. and Justin Kimball (Felecia), of Halifax; sisters, Colleen (Collie) MacDougal of Lower Sackville and Catherine White of Enfield; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
The family is deeply grateful for the outstanding care provided by Dr. Cathryn Smith over the many years and to the end.
