Neil, Andrew, Erin, and Colin: I worked with Joanne for 10 years at the IWK. She was a dear friend. I still feel stunned and shocked at her loss. I will treasure the many memories we shared. I know how much she loved her family from the many conversations we had about you. I'll always picture her practicing her golf swing in the hallways of our office. She could talk endlessly about her game. She made me laugh many days and in more difficult times at the IWK, we had many venting session. I know she touched so many lives and her heart was huge. She was one of the most genuine people I've ever known. She will be so missed. My heart aches for you all, as this was such a tragic and sudden loss for you. Treasure all the wonderful memories of your mom. My thoughts are with you all.

I want to express my deepest sympathy to Joanne's husband and children. Joanne was truly a great person to work with and to be around. She was a woman who loved life, her family and constantly talked to me about when and where she would be golfing next. I will really miss her smile and her wit and am so sorry that she did not get the chance to enjoy what she was so looking forward to which was spending more time with her family, not having the stress of working and of course her beloved golf. Joyce Anne Hines posted a condolence
Dear Neil, Erin, Andrew and Colin, I was shocked and greatly saddened to here of the loss of your mom. Although we have not spent time together over the last number of years, I fondly remember the times she and I shared as co chairs of the social committee for the ladies division of the golf course. We had lots of good laughs, worked well together and even managed to get a few games of golf in together, including a two ball tournament at Oakfield. Your mom was passionate about her game and never hesitated to share that passion with others. Over the years we would bump into each other on occasion, sharing updates on how our families were doing, quick work chats and always a talk about golf. Please accept my sincere condolences for the loss of your mom and partner. She was a great lady, a true ambassador for the game of golf and most of all, a proud mother. Sincerely, Joyce Anne

I want you to know how sorry I am that Joanne has passed. Words cannot describe how much I will miss her also. It is hard to believe that a few short months ago we were planning the upcoming summer. Of my friends, Joanne was the one I had the most fun with - to think that there will be no more frenchy's boutique shopping, no more floating in the pool guzzling beer or being the last fools out on the golf course is without a doubt a sad future. I have great memories to think back on and get a few chuckles at some of the times we had together. She will always be in my thoughts and dearly missed. Let me know when you plan your memorial service for her. My thoughts are with you and am always available if you need any help at anytime. A friend Pam

Anne Gniewek posted a condolence
To Joanne's family, This is the first time I have been inspired to submit an online condolence and you have likely never heard of me nor met me. I am a staff nurse in the Peds O.R. at the IWK and I had the privilege of working with Joanne. I was shocked to hear of her passing. I'm sure you are all very sad not to have her with you anymore. However, she was the kind of person that will stay with you forever. She had so many good qualities...as soon as I met her I thought she was someone I could be friends with. She was professional, classy, beautiful inside and out and took pride in everything she did. Her calm sensible outlook on work and her content happy outlook on life all combined to make her a great person to know. We shared the love of golf and she often commented on her game and how pleased she was last summer...she was on fire! She gave me lots of tips on courses to play and last year I took her advice and enjoyed some different locations for the first time. Above all, her love of family was apparent...she would light up with a smile from ear to ear when speaking of her family. I would often pass her while she was waiting on the sidewalk for a drive and we would exchange a sentence or two about her weekend plans. It was always something she was looking forward to and she seemed to surround herself with positive experiences. She was one of the happiest people I knew. She wasn't looking forward to the changes at work where she would have to move off site. She enjoyed working with us and among us. She was engaged and dedicated and always approachable. She was the best person I have ever encountered for scheduling with the ability to achieve the goal while taking into consideration everyone's preferences. That was no easy task with over 25 of us and yet she remained open and flexible. We will all miss her very much. I honestly don't think she can be replaced. She was taking it all in stride and as always, trying to make the best of it...looking forward to retirement. However, I got the sense she wasn't one to wish her time away and made the most of every day. I hope I have given you a glimpse of Joanne as I knew her. I can only imagine how wonderful she was among the people she loved. And it was obvious she felt your love because she glowed. May you always feel her glow. Yours sincerely, Anne Gniewek RN

Lori Harris posted a condolence
I loved Joanne. She always had a smile on her face and spoke straight from her heart. I had the pleasure of working with her at the IWK PACU/Day Surg/OR for the past few years. I always loved her say-it-like-it-is honesty, her beauty and zest for life. She was the picture of health, always dressed immaculately in her lovely dresses and outfits. We talked about her vaction to Ontario last year and that she would finally get to see the Niagra Falls and golf in Ontario. She had a lot of fun. She didn't want to move her office to another floor and believe me, we were all dreading it along with her. We loved seeing her each day when she slipped out of her office to chat for a few minutes. She had a deep, hearty laugh which is what I think of when I think of Joanne. She will be greatly missed and often thought of. If Heaven has a golf course, she is playing right now with a smile on her face. God bless.

Hello Neil, I worked with Joanne on the Parent-Child team for almost 4 years until the demise of the team. Joanne was our rock, our foundation. I have so many positive memories of her. She made me laugh at work. She was always so full of life and looked after herself. She talked about you and Erin and Andrew and Colin all of the time. I felt like I knew you. This is such a shock. I can't believe that she's gone. She should be planning her golf games for the summer of her retirement! Joanne was one of the strongest women I've ever met. She knew who she was and what she stood for and she would tell you about yourself at the drop of a hat. And I respected her for that. I enjoyed working with Joanne. And I was scared of her. LOL! (I mean that in the most respectful way!!!!!!) Joanne commanded respect and no one took advantage of her and I loved that about her. People treat admin staff like crap... but not Joanne. I wouldn't dream of asking her to do certain things that I could do myself. But Joanne was always there for our team. She shielded us and protected us. When she would go on vacation, we'd be lost without her. She was the anchor. I can't imagine what you and the kids are going through right now; how sudden this has all happened. Please know that those of us from the Parent-Child team are ready, willing and able to do anything that you need from us. For Joanne. Slainte, Johneen
