Prominent Retired Hantsport Doctor Passes Away
Dr. George Kenny passed away peacefully on January 9, 2016 at Windsor Elms Village, Falmouth. Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia in 1921 to Calvin and Annie (Fahie) Kenny, the family moved when he was a child to Grand Pré in the beautiful Annapolis Valley where they worked on the family farm. He attended Kings County Academy in Kentville and worked at the Nova Scotia Hospital as an RN before joining the RCAF and serving overseas. After the war he studied medicine at Dalhousie University, graduating in 1953.
His first practice was in Souris, PEI where he worked for a year before settling in Hantsport as a family physician until retiring in 1978. He continued working as an anesthesiologist at the Hants Community Hospital in Windsor before retiring for good in 1988.
George married Winnifred "Winnie" MacAulay in 1948 in Wolfville, and they raised their four children – Sam, Anna, Richard and Carolyn - together in Hantsport. Shortly after they had retired and moved from Hantsport to Windsor, Winnie passed away in June 1979. After being so fortunate the first time around, lightning struck twice when George met Mary Kirwin a few years later and they were married in Edmonton in 1982. While being primarily based in Falmouth, they made numerous trips to Edmonton to visit with friends and Mary's family before she passed away in May 2007.
When not working at his medical practice George managed to keep occupied with a variety of hobbies and pastimes, including curling, golf, music, horseshoes and pretty much any card game, particularly bridge. His get-togethers with his brothers in Wolfville and at the cottage were frequent (and legendary). George was also very involved in his community, most notably with his church and the Knights of Columbus.
George is survived by his children, Sam (Donna Dawkins), Anna (David Allen), Richard (Cindy Wedge) and Carolyn; grandchildren, Rob, Meghan, Trevor, Troy, Jillian, Emily, Andrea, Tamara and Gregory; seven great-grandchildren; step-children, Pat (Jeananne), Katherine, Anne, Mike (Sumon), and Mark (Dianne); stepdaughter-in-law, Marlene Kirwin, and their children. Aside from his parents, Calvin and Annie, he was predeceased by his wives, Winnie and Mary; siblings, Cecil, Muriel, William, Bernard, Samuel, Kathleen, Harold, James, Robert, and step-son, Will Kirwin.
Arrangements have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the Royal Canadian Legion will conduct a tribute service on Wednesday, January 13 at 6:30 p.m., with visitation to follow from 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will take place 3 p.m. Thursday, January 14 in St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, 118 Main St., Wolfville, Rev. Father Craig Cameron officiating. Interment will take place at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Cemetery, Ridge Road, Wolfville.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks for their support to friends and staff at Manning Retirement Home and the Windsor Elms Village, and to parishioners of Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church. Family flowers only, by request, and if so desired donations may be made to the Hants Community Hospital or Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Windsor.
