Obituary of Barbara Dorothy Hughes

Age 93 of Windsor, Nova Scotia passed away on October 5, 2021 at home. Born in Bournemouth, England, she was the daughter of the late William James Pope and Dorothy Margaret (Carter) Pope. She is survived by her son, Trevor, daughter-in-law, Mary Ann and granddaughter, Abigail. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Gordon.
She was educated at Bournemouth School for Girls and the University of London (LLB) and was called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn, London in 1950 and to the Nova Scotia Bar in 1951. She practiced law in Windsor, Nova Scotia from 1951 until 1994, was a member of the Canadian Barristers’ Association, the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Association and the Hants County Barristers’ Association and was appointed a Queen’s Council member in 1971.
Together with her husband Gordon, she was instrumental in the incorporation of Evangeline Savings & Mortgage Company, a federal loan company, in 1964. She served as the Chair of the Board of Directors, Chief Executive Officer and President of Evangeline Trust Company (later Equisure Trust Company). She served as a director of Circuit Investment Limited, Ocean Company Limited, Maritime Telegraph & Telephone Company, Atlantic Trust Company, Annapolis Travel Limited and Evangeline Securities Limited. She also served as a public director of the Investment Dealers’ Association of Canada, as a member of the Board of Directors of Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation, as a member of the Council of Advisors to the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, as National Chair of the Board of Directors of Participaction and as a public director of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia.
She served as a member of the Board of Governors of King’s-Edgehill School (where she was instrumental in the preservation of Convocation Hall) and Acadia University. She founded the Windsor Elm Tree Society and was the recipient of the Town of Windsor Civic Award in 1978. In recent years she served as a member of the Board of Directors of Christ Church Foundation.
Always an avid tennis player, she partnered her husband Gordon in many mixed doubles competitions in Canada and abroad and was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from Tennis Canada.
There will be no visitation or service at the request of the family. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date in Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor.
