This morning’s glorious sunrise was for my sister, Barb…
Just moments after I snapped this photo, I got a phone call…It was time to go to her side. After suffering a stroke early in the morning on Dec. 3rd and transferring to Valley Hospice on Dec. 12th, Barb went to her heavenly home surrounded by her family. Her suffering is over, and she is now smiling and singing with so many loved ones gone before her.
Music has always been a huge part of Barb’s life and it was music that carried her home. As “Silent Night” played out its last few words in her room…” Sleep in heavenly peace…sleep in heavenly peace…”, Barb took her final breaths…what a gift, as peace is what I have been praying for…❤️
We love you and will miss you fiercely…we will meet again.

Thinking of you with love, dear Barb.
I find myself reminiscing a lot of when we first met and became Pentecostal Sub-Arctic Mission roommates in Hay River from 1978 -1981.
I recount fun times - Stagg Lake, the Back Eddy Steak Spice fiasco and bear watching at the local dump, to name just a few. Your full of life laugh could often be heard in Fourplex 2 and your personality & smiles made sharing space fun.
I think of when we were both working in Yellowknife at the same time; you at YK Catholic Schools/YCS Central Office and I at the YK Education District No.1 - I still feel guilty about me making us miss a mid-day movie date. We did however make it to the Wildcat Cafe for a hearty bowl of Great Slave Fish Chowder.
I reflect on amusing catch up's during visits from time to time when you'd come to Edmonton, before & after retirement.
I especially look back on one of the best times ever, when you and Craig welcomed me into your new home in Three Mile Plains in July 2022. There were special day trips around and about, which included Lisa's, Berwick, Jonny's, Vernon's & Beach Meadows beach fun....so many memories.
You told me you felt very blessed when you and Craig were in Edmonton for two weeks just this past November 2023 - I simply could not wait to see you both & hug you tight at the luncheon.
Christmas, embraced by Jesus....what could be more fitting? An abundance of music, plenty of worshipful singing and I'm sure there are sunflowers there, too - just for you! See you again friend, in the sweet bye and bye.
Dear Craig, Meghan, Taylor, Karen, Brian and families...I can't imagine the heartache you're going through. Please know you're not alone. Barb was one in a million....memories live on!

Our hearts are broken, but we are blessed with the memories of a life well lived and well loved. Barb was more than my sister, she was my friend. We spent time together..at the beach, on walks, singing together, exploring little towns and harbours, taking pictures of our outings together, discovering new restaurants, and making memories. I am flooded with those memories and I’m so grateful for them. In the last few months Barb believed that every day was a gift, even the hard ones. We all believed that along with her and did our best to make our time count. Barb, I love you so much and I miss you, but I do know that one day you and I will sing together again. Meanwhile…sleep in Heavenly peace…

Our deepest and heartfelt sympathies to Craig, Meghan, Taylor, Karen, Brian and families. Barb was like the sweetest song in my life. She brought so much joy and laughter even in the daily grind of life. She always had time for me and we had a few adventures like a daring winter trip to Hay River and a delightful trip to Victoria, had fish and chips and basked in the beauty of the place. She was such good company. She was my favourite worship singer and I was always impressed by the numerous songs and hymns she knew. She is sure to be part of the heavenly choir. It’s a hard loss for all of us but she fought bravely to the end so we will cherish her life with much love and fondness. Craig and the kids were always first with her. Always in my heart and we will see you again in glory. Love you my dear friend

To Craig, and family. Much, sincere condolences at your loss. But will be Heaven's gain. Barb was always selfless, and loved God first. I was a nurse and worked with her in Hay River. (As i say to some now, she was so kind; you could not make her unkind. Was a great witness to all in Hay River.) Praying for your comfort and strength.

"Our God,
We thank you for the blessing of my sister, who filled our lives with joy and love. In our sorrow, remind us of your constant presence and consoling peace. We treasure the memories and wisdom she left behind. May her spirit now find rest in your never-ending care.
Amen."
Sometimes we take things for granted and expect things in life will remain constant. For our family, this sure proved not to be the case in 2023. I will miss my sister immeasurably. Sleep in heavenly peace Barb.

I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Barb’s passing. I had the honor and pleasure of working with her for a number of years at a Yellowknife school. There’s no busier place than a school office but Barb always had a smile and was ready to help. She loved a good joke or quick prank and we were so sad when she left the school. I remember trying to come up with the best present to show her how much we loved her. Finally we created a collage of all the places and people that loved her. We still do and I will always remember her smiling and laughing. Heaven just got a little more fun!

Barb was golden. She and Marilyn shared a dorm room at school, as "the Smith Sisters". Sunshine followed her wherever she went, her laughter echoed down the halls of college, across tables in restaurants... She was my/our friend from then until the end. Exploring NS won't be the same without you.
Our heartfelt condolences to all who knew her.
We will continue to often reminisce about her capers and antics.
If you ever need a pick-me-up, let us know and we will regale you with tales across the miles, around the globe.
We share in your sorriw

So very sorry for your loss. Having worked for nine years with Barb at the YCS Board Office, I was blessed to have been on the receiving end of her humour, compassion, and kindness. She often spoke of her passion for music, her love for Craig, Meaghan and Taylor, the power of her faith, and about her longing to return to the East Coast. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this heartbreaking time in your lives.

Barb was a wonderful friend for many years. I have known her since the early years in Hay River NT. Her obituary said it all - one in a million and a precious friend who will be missed beyond words.
Gone but NEVER forgotten
Loved and cherished forever
We shared many great times, laughs, prayers and more hugs than we could count.
Spread your wings and fly Barb. You are free of this earth's limits.

I worked with Barb at St. Joe’s in Yellowknife for many years and I think a great tribute to Barb I remember was one time I was speaking to a parent who didn’t know Barb’s name but referred to her as “that really, really nice lady who works in the office”.
That was Barb.
Please accept my condolences on your loss of a mother, wife and friend.

Craig, Meghan, Taylor, Brian, Karen & Families,
There are never words at a time like this that can truly express the sorrow one feels for the loss that can be overwhelming for all. In our growing up years Barb often seemed like another sister as often if we were going somewhere, Mom would say "Does Barb want to come?" Camp and youth days are special memories of such times. Sundays afternoons spent together between church services, and many sing-alongs. Then to think it's been 45 years since we took on the "Hay River Adventure", Barb as always was game for going! Although, we were apart in miles for most of our married lives, when we did get to connect again once you moved East, it was like the years evaporated and we could just "pick up" where we left off. Barb's positivity during this illness, her posts and pictures on FB were inspiring to many. May all the beautiful memories and pictures warm your hearts. Barb..until we meet again..., "carry the harmony".

It's been many years since we have seen one another face to face but I have great memories of being with you in the north. Yours was the only wedding reception I ever played my sax. Barb was a special woman and had an impact on so many. As you reflect and remember her life may you also sense God's arms wrapped around you, holding you close to His heart. He is near to you.

Barb, I will miss you in so many ways but forever cherishing the many, many memories that you gave to me and allowed me to be a part of. I know you are watching over me and the kids to ensure we are safe and ok. I am so sad we ended our time together on this land so soon as we had lots of things yet to do and miles to drive and photos to take and songs to sing. May God add you to the choir of angels to sing upon all of us here. Until we meet again. I love you!
