Obituary of Barbara Elizabeth Broddy

It is with heartbreaking sadness that we, the family, announce the death of Barbara Elizabeth Broddy, of Three Mile Plains, who passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2023 in Valley Hospice, Kentville, at the age of 64. Barb was born on July 11, 1959 in Windsor, to the late Richard and Doreen (Ettinger) Smith, the first of their three children.

She grew up in Hantsport. After she graduated high school, she completed a secretarial course at the Windsor Vocational School. This accomplishment set the course for a long and successful career in various office settings in the Northwest Territories, British Columbia and Nova Scotia. In 1978 she set out for Hay River, NT, where she started a new path working with the Pentecostal Sub-Arctic Mission (PSAM) in various administrative roles at H. H. Williams Memorial Hospital. Her life with PSAM at the hospital was for about 11 years and was a huge part of her life where she had made so many lifelong friends.

In 1986, Barb went to Western Pentecostal Bible College in Abbotsford, BC as a student and then worked in the office. Upon her return to Hay River in 1988, Barb there married Craig on October 8. In 1990 their daughter, Meghan was born. In 1991 Barb and Craig returned to Nova Scotia, living in a variety of communities including New Minas, Wolfville and Windsor. Their son, Taylor, was born in 1994. Barb worked at Wolfville Acadia University as a Secretary for a number of departments and as Office Manager for the Acadia Alumni Office. In 1996 the family moved back up North, to Fort Providence, NT. Here, Barb worked a variety of office roles at the Snowshoe Inn while she homeschooled Meghan. In 1991, Barb and Craig moved to Yellowknife. In Yellowknife, Barb worked as a Secretary for a graphics company and then spent the majority of her time in Yellowknife working for Yellowknife Catholic Schools for 19 years as a school secretary at two schools and then as Office Manager at the YCS Central Office.

In 2019, after Barb and Craig both retired, they moved to Three Mile Plains which is close to Hantsport where her parents, brother and sister reside. She had a lot of friends all across Canada. She had a place to stay wherever she went. She was a friend who could be trusted with a confidence, to offer guidance and support or simply fun to hang out with. Music was always a huge element in Barb’s life, having grown up singing with her family, church worship teams and joining friends at various music jams. Barb loved the ocean and the beach. She loved a good road trip and made it her mission to find the perfect lobster roll in Nova Scotia. She loved taking pictures. Her social media posts documenting her adventures through photography were much appreciated by her friends and family.

Barb is survived by her husband, Craig; daughter, Meghan, Edmonton, AB; son, Taylor (Belinda), Edmonton, AB; brother, Brian (Valerie) Smith; sister, Karen (Stephen) Price, several nieces and nephews and many extended family members.

The family would like to thank the staff of the QEII Neurology Department, the Chemo Unit at Valley Regional Hospital and Valley Hospice, for their excellent care of Barb.

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. Following that service, Barb’s wishes are that her family and friends gather for a celebration where everyone can enjoy a time of music and songs that she so enjoyed singing over the years.
